Bonds: Pensioners to government: We are no longer alive; obtain financing for our payment through the Treasury market instead

Pensioner bondholders claim they must use their coupons and principal to pay for medical expenses in order to remain alive. As a result, they have advised the government to borrow money from the Treasury market in order to pay them, given that President Nana Akufo-Addo has claimed in the past that he is skilled at reviving the economy but not at the expense of human lives.

On Monday, May 8, 2023, the pensioners continued their picketing outside the Ministry of Finance in order to demand payment of their principal and coupons that have matured.

They have decided to continue picketing up until their principals and coupons are paid.

The chairman of the pensioner bondholders forum, Dr. Adu Anane Antwi, said to journalists today at the ministry:”The government can purchase treasury bills on the market to borrow funds to pay us.”

He said, “You are faced with a scenario where you have to do that for people who need their money for medication. If you borrow from the treasury bills market, it will increase your debt level.

The president once declared that while it was impossible to bring the dead back to life, it was possible to revive the economy. We are therefore discussing retirees who require financial assistance for medical care. Borrow money from the market for treasury bills and pay them so they can live because if you don’t and they die, you can’t bring them back.
